Gooby Drop: the complete guide to falling with style

Gooby is a small orange blob with very big eyes and absolutely no wings. Gooby has jumped anyway. Your job is to steer him through an endless shaft of spiked walls while he screams, babbles and narrates every bad decision on the way down.

What is Gooby Drop?

Gooby Drop is a free, fast, one-thumb arcade game that runs in any browser. Gooby falls. Walls covered in spikes rise up from below, each with a gap. You slide Gooby left and right to fit through the gaps. Miss one and Gooby goes splat.

There is no slow start. The fall begins the moment you tap, and it keeps getting faster. A good run lasts 20 to 40 seconds and feels like a lot more. You'll die, laugh at whatever Gooby says, and be falling again in under a second.

The whole thing was built to be played on a phone and screen-recorded: a tall 9:16 frame, huge captions, and a mascot who never stops talking.

Gooby is fictional and so are his injuries. No blobs were harmed in the making of this game. A few were flattened.

On a phone, steering is relative: put your thumb down anywhere and slide. Gooby moves with your thumb's motion, a little faster than your thumb, so small movements go a long way and your hand never covers the walls coming up from the bottom of the screen. The full breakdown is on the how-to-play page.

Meet Gooby

Gooby is round, orange, and loud. He has a tuft of hair that whips around in the wind, two mismatched eyes that go wide when a wall gets close, and tiny arms that flail the entire time.

He also never stops talking. Every second or two, Gooby says something, in fluent Gooby: a high, squeaky, cartoon gibberish voice that your browser generates on the spot. A big caption shows what he means:

"I CAN FLY! I CANNOT FLY." · "SORRY FOR SCREAMING!" · "HI RAT! BYE RAT!" · "TELL MY FISH I LOVE HIM"

He reacts to everything. Squeeze through a gap with almost no room and he yells "MY EYEBROWS!" Grab a donut and you get "NOM!" Hit a balloon and he says "BOING!" with his whole body. And when it's over, there's a long, heartfelt "NOOOOOO!", a record scratch, and a sad trombone.

Because the captions are huge, Gooby is still funny with the sound off, which matters when half of the people watching your clip are scrolling in a quiet room.

The four depths

Gooby falls through four very different places, and each one has its own scenery, its own jokes and its own big title card.

1. The Sky (first 10 seconds)

Blue sky, fluffy clouds, the occasional confused bird. The walls are wide open while you learn to steer. Gooby is having the time of his life.

2. Downtown (10 to 20 seconds)

Skyscraper windows rush past on both sides. Gooby apologizes to the people inside for screaming. The pace picks up, and soon after, double-gap walls make you choose a side.

3. The Sewers (20 to 30 seconds)

Gooby has somehow gone through the street. Green brick, dripping pipes, a rat or two. Walls with moving gaps arrive, and Gooby's opinion of the smell is not positive.

4. The Core?! (30 seconds and beyond)

Red rock, glowing embers, and the heat of what may be the center of the Earth. The speed is near maximum. Gooby reports that his butt is on fire. He is not wrong.

Walls, balls and donuts

ThingGood or badWhat it does
Spiked wallBadFind the gap. Touch the yellow-and-black part and it's over.
Double-gap wallBadTwo narrower gaps. Pick the one you can reach.
Moving-gap wallBadThe gap slides back and forth. Time your entry.
Spiky ballBadBounces sideways between walls, with angry little red eyes.
DonutGood+10 meters of bonus. Usually sitting right in the middle of a gap.
BalloonGoodPops, slows the fall for a moment and gives you a breather. BOING.
BubbleGoodA shield that saves you from one hit. Every run starts with one. Gooby calls this "BUBBLE MODE."
Troll wallVery badLooks normal. The moment you commit, the gap jumps to the other side and the wall yells NOPE. Watch for it and be ready to swerve.
Angry treeBadGrows out of the side, shakes, creaks, then punches a branch across half the screen. Stay on the other side.
SAFE signLiesPoints straight at the spikes. Never trust the sign.
Stinky donutRudeLooks like a donut, has little green lines over it. Grab it and Gooby gets blasted sideways.

Score, combos and ranks

Your score is how far Gooby falls, in meters, shown huge at the top of the screen. Donuts add bonus meters, and so do close calls.

A close call is when Gooby slips through a gap with almost no room to spare. Each close call in a row builds a combo: "CLOSE!", "CLOSE! x2", "CLOSE! x3", with a rising ding each time and a bigger bonus. Pass a wall comfortably in the middle and the combo resets. Brave players hug the edges on purpose.

Ghost races and the Daily Drop

Race a friend's ghost

Every run you share carries a link to that exact run. When a friend opens it, they get the same walls in the same places, plus a see-through purple Gooby labeled FRIEND, replaying your run move for move. Their goal is simple: still be falling when your ghost goes splat. Pass it and Gooby yells "RIP FRIEND!"

Tap Share on the result screen to send the link with your result card, or Copy to paste it anywhere.

The Daily Drop

Once a day, everyone in the world gets the same course. Tap Daily Drop on the title screen, then compare depths with friends, in group chats, or in the comments. Your best for the day is saved, and a new course arrives at midnight.

Something rare

Every so often, something happens to Gooby that he's been dreaming about his whole life. It doesn't last. If it happens to you, you'll know. Record it.

Also: the game lies. Not all the time. Just enough. Some players swear they've seen the ending. Some players have seen their own thumbs betray them. If something feels unfair, it probably is, and it'll be funnier on video than it was in your hands.

Donuts unlock new looks

Donuts you catch are saved between runs. Collect 20 for sunglasses, 60 for a party hat, 150 for a crown and 300 for the Golden Gooby. Pass your best mid-run and the game celebrates with a NEW RECORD banner and confetti.

10 tips to fall farther

  1. Look below Gooby, not at him. Your eyes belong on the next wall coming up.
  2. Small thumb moves. Steering is amplified. Tiny slides are enough.
  3. Get to the gap early. Line up as soon as a wall appears, then make small corrections.
  4. On double gaps, pick the closer one. Changing your mind halfway is how Gooby meets the middle.
  5. Moving gaps: aim for the center of the swing. The gap passes through it twice per cycle.
  6. Watch which way spiky balls are rolling. Go where they're coming from, not where they're going.
  7. Donuts mark the safe line. They usually sit in the center of a gap.
  8. Grab balloons when things get crowded. The slowdown buys you a moment to line up.
  9. Only chase combos once you're comfortable. Edge-hugging is high reward, high splat.
  10. Play with sound on. The beat speeds up with the fall, and you'll feel the rhythm of the walls.

Recording for TikTok and Reels

Gooby Drop was made to be recorded. Everything you hear, including the music and Gooby's voice, is original and generated in code, so your clips can't get muted for using someone else's audio.

On iPhone

Add Screen Recording in Settings → Control Center. Swipe down from the top-right corner, tap record, and switch to the game. Turn off the silent switch first or there will be no game sound.

On Android

Swipe down twice from the top and tap Screen record. Choose "Device audio" so Gooby's voice is captured. If you don't see the button, edit your quick settings and drag it in.

What makes a clip people watch to the end

Why falling games are so hard to put down

Falling games work because the screen is always moving, and every wall is its own tiny decision. There's no downtime: a new choice arrives every half second, and the choices keep getting faster. It's the same reason you can't look away from someone else's run, because you're making the decisions with them.

Gooby adds the other half: a character. A ball falling through gaps is a puzzle. A panicking blob yelling "I SHOULD HAVE TAKEN THE STAIRS" while falling through gaps is a story, and you want to know how it ends, even though you know exactly how it ends.

Taking breaks

Gooby never needs a break. You do. A few runs at a time is the sweet spot. If your thumb is sore or your eyes feel tired, stop, stretch and look at something far away for a minute. Gooby will be right here, still falling, still loud.

The game includes fast motion and a brief screen shake when Gooby splats. If motion on screens makes you uncomfortable, take it slow or skip it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Gooby Drop free?

Yes. It's free in your browser, with no download, no account and no purchases.

How do I steer on a phone?

Put your thumb anywhere on the game and slide left or right. Gooby moves with your thumb's movement, so you never have to cover the walls coming up.

What language is Gooby speaking?

Gooby speaks fluent Gooby, a gibberish voice generated live by your browser. The captions tell you what he means.

Why is there no sound?

On iPhone, check the silent switch. On any device, the sound starts after your first tap, and the speaker button in the corner might be muted.

Can I use the game sound in my videos?

Yes. Every sound and the music are original and generated in code, so you can post recordings of your runs anywhere.

Can I add it to my home screen?

Yes. Use "Add to Home Screen" from your browser's share or menu options. It opens full screen like an app, which is great for recording.

Is my best score saved?

Your best depth is saved in your browser on this device. Nothing is sent to a server. Clearing site data resets it.

Why did the game pause?

It pauses automatically when you switch apps or scroll down to read this page, so a notification never costs you a run.

What is the purple Gooby?

That's your friend's ghost. If you opened someone's shared link, you're playing their exact course, and the ghost replays their run. Outlast it to beat them.

Is it OK for kids?

Yes. No violence beyond cartoon splats, no swearing, and no chat.

Final thoughts

Gooby will never learn to fly. He knows this. He does not care. Every run he jumps again, screams again, and gets a little farther before the walls win. Help him get to the core.
